MP’s son arrested, then released on bail after assaulting PC

The son of Puttalam District Member of Parliament Shantha Sirira Kumara Abeysekara was released on bail this week, following a brawl that broke out between the MP’s son and a police constable of the Ministers’ Security Division (MSD).
The suspect, Ishan Chathuranga Abeysekara, was released on Rs100,000 cash bail each for two counts.
The case will be taken up again on February 12, next year.
MP Abeysekara stated that the incident took place between the two individuals following an exchange of derogatory words. The brawl subsequently led to the MP’s son being remanded and the officer being admitted to the Chilaw Hospital.
“The MSD officer had received a phone call from a personal contact and started shouting into the phone in filth,” said MP Abeysekara. “My son told him to go get some sleep and to not talk like that. The officer got angry at this and turned and assaulted my son. This is the reason this happened,” he claimed.
Police investigations into the incident continue.
