Wewal Wewa MV, Dambulla retains title
Wewal Wewa Maha Vidyalaya, Dambulla clinched the All-Island Inter-Schools Under-16 Baseball Championship for the second consecutive year, defeating D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo, in the finals played on Wednesday.
Organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Baseball Association, this annual tournament is catching up at a rapid speed in the outstations and the organisers are expecting the number of teams to increase in the coming years.
Wewal Wewa MV found their spot in the finals by defeating Ranabima Royal College in the first semi-final while D.S. Senanayake College beat the same opponent in the second semi-finals.
Winning the toss the Wewal Wewa MV skipper gave the opportunity to bat first to the Colombo school. The Dambulla lads started off in a bang dismissing three DSS batters without conceding a run. The champions replied with four runs to get on top.
In the second innings, DSS made an attempt to come back to the game scoring two runs and ran through the opponent batting line giving away only one run.
DSS batters failed to continue their form in the second innings, losing three batters for no run while Wewal Wewa extended their score by two more runs in the third innings.
The fourth innings was completely dominated by the Dambulla lads as they dismantled the opposition’s three batters without giving away any runs while Wewal Wewa MV scored a massive six runs making it impossible for DSS to come back.
Needing two runs to get the gap below 10, DSS were never given a chance to score as their innings closed without scoring. As a result Wewal Wewa MV were crowned winners without having to bat in the fifth innings.
