Appe Lanka holds auction for Poonakary water project
View(s):A fundraiser auction for Appe Lanka will be held at the boutique hotel Maniumpathy on Kynsey Road, Colombo 8 on Saturday, July 20 to raise funds to provide water for the children of Poonakary in the North.
There is no safe drinking water in Poonakary and schoolchildren have to depend on bowsers for water. Water purification systems have now been installed in 18 schools in Poonakary under an Appe Lanka project and this effort is hoping to raise enough funds so that all 6,500 children in Poonakary will have safe drinking water at any time.
Among the eclectic collection of items to be auctioned will be a set of autographed books by Michael Ondaatje (The English Patient, Warlight and The Cat’s Table – two copies of each book), a weekend for two at Kandy House and a set of sketches by Pala Pothupitiya.
Also on auction will be interesting experiences: hot air ballooning for 2 persons in the Dambulla area, a bike ride for four to Lunuganga with Peter Bluck followed by a Lunuganga lunch, a fishing trip for 6-8 people on Bolgoda Lake, a three-night Caravan stay for four at Nuwara Eliya.
Overseas experiences include a Dinner for 4 at the Oyster bar in Penn Station, New York and even a week in Trequanda (Tuscany) Italy (sans airfare).
Re-Awakening Lanka, initiated the project titled Appe Lanka to empower the people in the North and East with the aim of giving them usable water, short distance travel facilities, sustainable livelihood and renewable energy. The project also aims at teaching core subjects to the students and fosters peace and reconciliation through the use of sports and arts.
The auction starts at 5 p.m and tickets are priced at Rs. 2000 per head. All proceeds from the project will go to the Poonakary water project.
