The highly awaited eighth edition of Red Bull Campus Cricket (RBCC) National Finals, an Anticipated fixture on the Sri Lankan sports calendar, bringing with it a feverish excitement and spirit is set to begin from today (July 21).

This international tournament provides the ideal opportunity for aspiring cricketers to represent their university and gain an opportunity to represent their country at an international cricketing spectacle, the RBCC World Finals. Red Bull launched RBCC with the aim of bridging the gap that exists for players between schools to club teams.

Tournament Director, Brendon Kuruppu

Years in, this aim has been achieved time and time again. Indeed, RBCC has now become a scouting ground for young and talented players to catch the eye of selectors from the national team as well, giving wings to young cricketing talent in the Island.

With the growth of RBCC, the competition witnessed the rise of internationally acclaimed players around the world such as K.L Rahul from India, Lungi Ngidi from South Africa, and Chirag Suri from UAE. From Sri Lanka, Niroshan Dickwella in 2017 and Chamika Karunaratne in 2018, were the hotshots at the respective seasons.

As such, the RBCC field provides a grooming ground for campus students around the island, who can delve into their passion for cricket and showcase their talents on this incredible platform, possibly paving the way to kickstart a national cricketing career.

The trophy on offer for the ultimate winners

Sri Lankan talent and skill has consistently been in the spotlight at Red Bull Campus Cricket throughout the years. Following the hosting of the very first Asia Finals in 2012, the first-ever World Finals were held at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in 2013.

Over the years, Sri Lanka has remained host to the RBCC World Finals for 2016, 2017, and 2018.

This year, 26 teams will compete in the National Finals, which will span from July 21 to 28, to determine who will represent Sri Lanka and contest for the world title in Dubai later this year. As always, the National Finals will prove to be a fierce tournament, where young and talented players from various campuses across Sri Lanka will play to conquer the national level, amidst a crowd of excited spectators in a tournament filled with both fun and competition.
