INSEE’s first Sustainability Report launched
INSEE Sri Lanka has helped the government to destroy 2000 tons of cocaine seized by the Customs safely without leaving any trace to prevent it falling back into wrong hands. This was done on a personal request made by the President to ensure a drug free society.
The technology and the capacity to destroy such noxious drugs is only available with the company, said the Chairman /Chief Executive Officer INSEE Cement in Sri Lanka, Nandana Ekanayake at a seminar held this week at the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo at the launch of the first INSEE Sustainable Development Report.
He said that one third of the houses in Sri Lanka are built using Sanstha cement, a heritage product of INSEE Cement produced locally. ”Around two million tonnes of cement is produced locally at our fully integrated plant at Puttalam. In addition another 1.5 million tonnes is produced at the two grinding plants in Galle, in the Southern province. We also have an import terminal set up in Colombo for the importation of 6000- 8000 tonnes of cement to meet the local requirement.”
The two heritage brands of cement produced locally are Sanstha and Mahaveli Marine Cement. Following the ownership change from Holsim to INSEE Cement during the past two and a half years, INSEE has invested US$47 million to increase the expansion and the production capacity of the plants. “We have the best kiln installed at our plant to reduce carbon emission to the environment and have set up a waste management plant in 2018 as a separate legal entity as a fully owned subsidiary of INSEE Cement. Last year we started a plant to produce a special type of concrete locally,” Mr. Ekanayake said. The ownership of Holcim Cement changed to INSEE Cement in 2016, a Thailand-based company. INSEE has a 8000 dealer network scattered around the country.
INSEE Medical Doctor Dr. Senarathna Dematapitiya said free medical care is provided to residents at Puttalam at the INSEE’s Medical Centre.
“People otherwise have to travel 26 miles to get to the government hospital. Around 100 persons call over at our medical centre to seek free treatment on a daily basis.” A water purification plant has been provided to villagers in the Puttalam District.
