Over Rs 70.9b to develop Education sector- MoE

The Ministry of Education (MoE), from 2015-2019, has spent over Rs 70.9 billion to provide building facilities, under programmes that promote safe and attractive learning environment within the school system.

Most of the development was done under the ‘Nearest School is the Best School’ project, an MoE report revealed.

The MoE expended Rs 9,970 million for modifications to 6,000 schools, Rs 11, 200 million on building 5,600 new classrooms, Rs 8,515 million to build 764 Primary Learning Resource Centres, Rs 14,500 million to build 254 Technical Laboratories and 261 Counseling buildings.

The government has also been erecting buildings or repairing dental clinics, plantation schools and sports schools, along with construction of special Resource Centre in Weniwelkola, 40 office buildings and latrines for pirivenas, 39 2-story Teacher Training Centres and Information & Communication Centres in 13 Education Zones.
