The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) Nuwara Eliya District said that schools in the Walapane Zone have failed to distribute Question papers from Grades 6-11 for the 2nd Term Tests, despite collecting money from them.

Secretary V. Indraselvam said that, although the Zone’s school administrations collected Rs. 55-75 from students for the Question papers, several schools in the Zone had failed to distribute them to all students, as they ran out of paper.

These schools did not receive Question papers in their entirety, for Information Technology, Music & Dance and Islam, and teachers had to improvise using past question papers. For the recently introduced Practical & Technology Skills (PTS), teachers were unable to conduct the exam for want of Question papers prepared.

However, the Zonal office denied the charges. Walapane Zonal Director, B.P. Navaratne said he has not received any such complaint from principals or teachers in the Zone. “There are around 10,000 students studying in Grades 6-11 in the Zone and we have distributed Questions papers to all,” he said.

“Furthermore there are photocopying machines available in some schools and if there is a shortage, extra copies could be made,” he said.

However, Mr. Indraselvan admits that several schools in the district have no such facility and had to rely on communications centres in the town for the purpose. - CC
