The Royal Asiatic Society of  Sri Lanka’s (RASSL) public lecture for July will be on “Usefulness of the commentarial tradition of the Tripitaka” by Ven. Maho Gnanaloko Thera at 5 p.m. tomorrow,  Monday,  July 29, at the Gamini Dissanayake auditorium,  No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha,  Colombo  7.

The texts of the tripitaka itself reveal a concern for interpreting  the Buddhavacana, even at the time of the Buddha. The Theravada suttas and commentaries were codified during the First Council, and the Buddha himself and some of his close disciples had from time to time interpreted some of the discourses. The Pali commentaries are important not only as an interpretation of the texts but also to understand the practice of texts in the past.

All are welcome.
