The Ministry of Education (MoE) is to declare an ‘English Only Day’ (EOD) , in all National and Provincial schools, for students above Grade 6, to give priority to learn English during that dedicated day, every week.

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told the Education Times that a circular will be issued with guidelines on the implementation of the EOD and will be supported by a guide book related to the activities such as Announcements, Conduct of Meetings and Extracurricular Activities in English, to be carried out on the particular day.

He said that due to lack of focus on the subject, the use of English in rural schools is insufficient. Minster Kariyawasam said that an Internal Audit will be informed to monitor the implementation and progress of the programme, with the Principals required to provide a monthly report.

He said, they believe that, a continuous monitoring process will be helpful to get the required results from the programmme.

The schools will also be required to include their proposals in their annual plan.
