A/L, O/L, Grade 5 Scholarship exams results keep improving- MoE Report
View(s):The latest Annual Performance Report (APR) of the Ministry of Education (MoE) reveals that the overall performance at the GCE A/L, GCE O/L and Grade 5 Scholarship exams have been improving over the years.
The 2018 APR tabled in Parliament shows the student achievement for the 2018 Grade 5 Scholarship exam was better than any of the previous years, with the highest percentage recorded for the number of students who obtained more than 70% marks.
In 2018, 79.09% achieved the mark, as against 69.4% in 2017, 75.67% in 2016, 76.33% in 2015, 78.96% in 2014 and 69.44% in 2013.
The GCE O/L also showed the best performance in years, with 75.1% passing the exam in 2018. It has gradually improved from 69.3% in 2015.
In 2018, Southern Province with 80% passing topped the batch, followed by Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa and North Western Provinces, all of which recorded more than 75%.
The other 4 Provinces had 70% or more.
The 2018 GCE A/L exam had 64.7% qualifying to enter University.
However, it was marginally lower than 2017, though it had shown an overall increase from 2013 (58.56%) onwards, with 61.25% in 2014, 62.35% in 2015, 63.36% in 2016 and 66.02% in 2017.
The APR notes that, considering the percentage of students who have qualified for University entrance, there is a positive tendency to increase the intake of students into the University, from the Biology, Physical Science, Engineering Technology and Bio-systems Technology streams.
