Lack of a National policy on the English Language taught in schools is driving the government to get down English teachers from overseas to teach English Language in schools, the Ceylon Teachers Union  (CTU) charged last week. The CTU said that the government is driven to enter into various agreements with foreign countries to strengthen the English Language capacities of students in rural Sri Lanka, and introducing a ‘English Only Day’ every week in the classrooms.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said, this will not address the deep rooted problem in the Education system. “It is important to determine the root cause of schoolchildren’s inability to master the English Language,” he said.

He said that, introducing teachers from the United States and having an ‘English Only Day’ are political gimmicks adopted to appease the voter on the eve of election time.

“This is done with a political agenda and the whole thing is a publicity stunt,” he said. - CC
