Royal, Isipathana out of Cup quarters
Two top contenders, Royal College and Isipathana College were knocked-out from the Cup Championship quarter-finals on the opening day of the Inter-Schools Under-18 Sevens Rugby Tournament worked off at the Racecourse Grounds and Royal Complex in Reid Avenue yesterday.
Royal suffered a shock 7-21 defeat at the hands of Sri Sumangala College, Kandy in their Group ‘F’ encounter while conceding three tries to their opponents.
Isipathana also failed to make it to the quarter-finals of the Cup Championship following a close 12-17 defeat in their Group ‘B’ match against S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia.
In contrast, the defending champions St. Peter’s College powered their way into the last eight with two convincing victories against Dharmaraja College (31-7) and St. Sylvester’s College (31-0) respectively.
Wesley College also secured their place in the Cup Championship quarter-finals with three rousing victories against St. Anthony’s College (19-12), St. Aloysius’ College (36-0) and St. John’s College (52-0) respectively.
Meanwhile, Trinity College recorded the biggest win for the day when they outplayed Nalanda College 66-0 and also went on to top Group ‘D’ with two convincing victories against Lumbini MV (38-0) and Richmond College (43-0).
