A world of unexpected opportunity
View(s):For Sri Lankan Doctor of Dental Surgery student and Bachelor of Biomedicine graduate Roshine Linus, the decision to study at the University of Melbourne afforded her far more than a university degree – attending Australia’s number one university offered her a world of unexpected opportunity.
“As a student at the University of Melbourne my studies have given me more than just an educational degree, they have provided me with an experience full of new learnings that went beyond simply academics,” says Roshine.
“The extracurricular and enrichment activities available to students at the University of Melbourne are at the heart of an unforgettable journey you will be on, should you decide to study here.”
From her first day on campus, Roshine instantly fell in love with university life and many of the benefits that came along with living right in the heart of one of the world’s most liveable cities.
“The University of Melbourne offers incredible courses, sporting facilities, social clubs and societies, scholarship programmes and more,” says Roshine.
“As soon as I arrived at the University of Melbourne, I was hungry to be a part of such an incredible institution and to fulfil my academic ambitions.”
Now in her first year of her graduate degree, Roshine has volunteered on campus as an Open Day guide, a member of the University’s Christian Union, and at various charity functions including ‘R U OK? Day’ (an event to raise awareness in aid of suicide prevention) and Mental Health Week.
Her active involvement at the University has helped her to gain new skills and given her the self-confidence to stand up for what she believes in.
“My experience as a volunteer allowed me to demonstrate what I had learned in the classroom and build on my skillset, while supporting the causes I am passionate about,” says Roshine.
“Each of my experiences has helped me to grow as a person and given me the confidence to be outspoken about what I truly believe in.”
As a volunteer Roshine quickly found the opportunity to make new friends, “meeting like-minded people who are equally driven and passionate about the things that I support has been the highlight of my experience at Melbourne,” says Roshine.
The opportunity to meet likeminded people and enjoy diverse cultures is something that Roshine has enjoyed throughout her studies at Melbourne.
“For me, the University of Melbourne successfully fulfilled the saying, ‘a home away from home’,” explains Roshine.
“I love the emphasis placed on different cultures and how each of these cultures are celebrated.”
As Roshine looks to the future she has discovered that an appreciation for diverse cultures and values is an attribute that goes beyond universityand into the Australian workplace.
“It has been a rewarding experience to mix with people from all over the world at university. This experience has also helped me to gauge how the Australian workplace would be in terms of cultural acceptance. It is clear to me that diversity is an important organisational value adopted by many of the companies in Australia,” says Roshine.
