BCAS organizes timely seminar on cyber-crimes in Sri Lanka

British College of Applied Studies popularly known as BCAS CAMPUS, established in 1999, has rapidly grown into one of the leading vocational and tertiary education providers in Sri Lanka. BCAS has comparatively a large number of students in the private sector higher education with strong collaboration with some of the renowned UK universities .
BCAS Campus organized a seminar on the topic of “Cyber Law: Sri Lankan Aspect “which is indeed appropriate and vital in the today’s context where computer-related crime and cyber-crime have become a significant global challenge. However, with the emerging use of computer technology, people’s knowledge on cyber-crime is virtually low. Hence, organizing an event of this nature is extremely topical.
The seminar was held on Saturday (17) at the BCAS Mount Campus under the patronage of two resource persons Attorney-at-Law Mr. Sunil D. B. Abeyaratne, and DIG Police Traffic & Safety / Attorney-at-Law Mr. Ajith Rohana. Dean Academic Affairs of BCAS Prof. Shanika Hirimburegama together with BCAS, management, staff, students and several other IT and Law professionals, including officers from various police stations took part in this event.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Abeyaratne made an introduction to Cyber Law and elaborated relevant Legislation in Sri Lanka.
He discussed certain provisions of the Computer Crimes Act and also how the prosecution could be taken in court with the various kinds of crimes encountered under the Computer Crimes Act.
Mr Abeyaratne explained the context taking certain recent cases in Sri Lanka related to the cyber-crimes into account.
Meanwhile, DIG Ajith Rohana touched on investigating cyber- crimes, threats, trends and challenges.
He discussed recent incidents in connection to the cyber-crimes occurred in Sri Lanka and pointed out that victims of those crimes, were hardly knowledgeable about what happened to them.
He also described as to how people could protect themselves by using high security information devises.
BCAS is hoping to conduct similar awareness programmes and CSR projects following the positive feedback they received from this seminar.
