If you enter the premises of Spectrum Institute of Science & Technology (SIST) between the hours 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm, your ears will be filled with a buzz of chatter and laughter.
You will also notice many energetic boys and girls walking about in the premises enjoying their lunch break. These dynamic individuals are the building blocks of the Spectrum Students’ Society (SSS). As the name suggests, SSS consists of energetic undergraduate students studying under this hallowed institute.
The Community Service, Green Army, Performing Arts Avenue, Sports, Visual Communication & Mass Media and the Editorial Club under SSS enhances the creativity, confidence, communication skills and the ability to work as a team. Each year the students are appointed to lead the SSS Board. This develops the leadership, teamwork as well as the followership skills among the students. These avenues bring together the undergraduate students with varying talents and provide a platform to hone their personalities.
Afore mentioned avenues conduct various fundraising activities and projects that greatly benefit the society. The SSS is always in search of opportunities to lend a hand to anyone in need and give back to the society.

The Community Service wing brings together compassionate individuals who are willing to work voluntarily towards the upliftment of standard of living of the needy.
The SSS is also happy to state that the first sports meet at Reach Beyond; a center for autistic children is being organized by our very dynamic team. It also organizes the blood donation campaign which is open to the public, and so many selfless individuals participate in this worthy cause.
The senior citizens club is also a monthly gathering of senior citizens of the community. Individual sessions with doctors and nutrition professionals are arranged for them. Students from Spectrum spend time with them, engaging them in conversation and board games.
The green army is, as the name suggests an army of students passionate about saving our planet Earth. The avenue has currently joined hands with the eco brick project, making and collecting eco bricks to reduce the amounts of polythene thrown away to bare land and the oceans. Creating a herbal garden at SIST is the next big step for green army.
The Performing Arts Avenue is responsible to bring out the hidden talents of the students of Spectrum. It gives them the opportunity to showcase their talents at “SPARQUE”. The annual concert put together solely by the students of SIST, which is open to the public, is a must watch! SPARQUE is the major fund raising event as the proceedings goes to the cancer hospital, Maharagama. The annual cancer hospital visit happens in the month of December. A glimpse of hope is given to all those hopeful patients in the month of giving, along with a donation of all the necessary medications.
The Sports Avenue organizes the cricket carnival, the badminton tournament – SMASH, carom, chess and scrabble tournaments annually to help them develop sportsmanship. This avenue helps the students to take a break from all the tiring assignments and exams and helps them to relax their body, mind and soul.
The editorial club is responsible in maintaining the blog: “THE SPECTRUM”. This gives the students and lecturers of Spectrum as well as the general public a chance to upload their original articles, photographs, poems, scientific news and even short stories. The editorial club gives the students an opportunity to improve their writing skills and also encourages them by rewarding the ‘Best Article’, ‘Best Writer’ and ‘Best photographer’ of the month.
The Visual Communication and Mass Media Avenue is the latest addition to the student body. Although established recently, the tech group has innovative ideas rolled up their sleeves. Stay tuned with the activities of SSS to be a part of it!
