Education Unions decry MoE ‘concessions’ to ‘politically victimised’ SLEAS officers
View(s):The Ministry of Education’s (MoE) move to grant concessions to 1,028 ‘politically victimised’ SLEAS officers, has come under protest from Education Unions (EU).
The EUs claim that, despite Government assurances in June 2018, that no officer will be granted appointments, promotions or increments on claims of political victimisation, has been ignored.
On June 26, 2018, the EUs representing the SLEAS officers, teachers and principals, planned a token strike protesting against the Government’s plan to grant 3,000 officials in the Education sector, concessions for being politically victimised.
However, the token strike was called off on the eve of the strike, in compliance with President Maithripala Sirisena’s request, as he had directed the MoE to appoint a 3-member committee to review the move, claimed the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU).
The committee was to review all files and the PSC to grant concessions to deserving persons, after discussion with the EUs.
The CTU claims the EUs were not consulted, and that, the MoE has no powers to act for the PSC, which is mandated with all administrative work of public servants.
“This is wrong and the MoE should immediately stop this move,” said CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin.
