Since, Education is becoming a professional qualification and the country currently facing a national shortage of qualified teachers with the ability to inspire the next generation to excel in studies at school level, mainly at the GCE (Ordinary Level) and (Advanced Level) Examinations, Horizon Campus has launched Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree programme that will produce the high caliber of educators to meet this requirement and help produce a better performance at final examinations in schools.

Dr.Selvarani Illanco, Head of the Department of the Faculty of Education at Horizon Campus spoke on the benefits that the degree will provide and the positive impact it will have in meeting the gap in skills of professionally qualified teachers that the nation is badly in need of at present.

She said “there is a huge dearth in qualified and experienced teachers at national level at present and our country’s target ideally must be to increase the share of qualified and experienced teachers, especially in the English language, Mathematics and Science subjects. These are areas that have always under – performed in Ordinary Level and Advanced Level Examinations over the last couple of years and this is mainly due to the lack of qualified teachers who are properly trained and geared to teach these subjects”.

She further stated that as such, the BEd Degree programme will provide extensive theoretical knowledge and practical skills, ensuring the participants are fully equipped to meet the demands of being a teacher at both local and international level.

Giving an insight into the degree she explained that across the four years of the programme, the key principal aspects of teaching consisting of Professional, General, Academic and Practical components are taught, giving a broad understanding and cultivating depth in gaining the extensive practical hands-on teaching experience and theoretical knowledge needed to graduate and attain “Qualified Teacher Status” after just four years. The degree covers key areas such as Psychology, Leadership and Management, Sociology, Measurement in Education, Curriculum Management and Counselling and Administration. Additionally, with Horizon’s long established links with local schools, allow them to offer school-based education projects and teaching practice for the third and fourth year students.

The degree that is designed by the top academic panel at Horizon Campus, has gained approval of the Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission whilst being accepted at a global level in country’s such as, Australia, the USA, Asia and Europe. The degree currently has a reputation of a 90%+ employment record.

Having commenced 10 successful batches at present, Horizon Campus will open intakes this month for their 11th batch of students.
