Weliweriya perahera today
A perahera carrying the sacred Buddha relics will parade the streets today in Weliweriya under the patronage of the Weliweriya West Sri Sudharshana Rama temple’s chief incumbent, the Ven. Wellagirige Rathanasirinayake Thera, and the Sri Poorwaramaya temple chief incumbent, the Ven. Dr. Mullegama Sumana Thera.
The procession beginning at 8 am from the Galoluwa junction will go through Weliweriya East, Weliweriya town and reach the Sri Sudharshanarama temple.
The Sudharshanarama Dayaka Sabawa has organised dansal en route to serve the parahera’s participants. Lunch will be served after the perahera. The Weliweriya police will deploy 50 officers to provide security and for traffic control.
Following the perahera, the sacred relics will be on display for three days for devotees to pay respect. In a reconciliatory move the St Anthony’s Church parish priest, Rev. Fr. Roshan Fernando, and the area’s Catholic community will also participate in the perahera.
