O/L Classes during holidays for good results
View(s):Tamil schools in the Walapane Education Zone (WEZ) continue to hold classes for the Ordinary Level (O/L) 2019 during their 2nd term holidays.
The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU), Nuwara Eliya district, said that principals of most Tamil schools have requested their teachers to hold classes in Maths, Religion and English Language in order to coach the students sitting for the O/L exams this year.
This follows poor O/L results from the Central Province (CP), at the 2018 exams, lowering the rankings of most of the Tamil schools.
Consequently, the WEZ has dropped from 4th place in 2017 to 13th place last year, along with the Hatton EZ which dropped from 3rd place in 2017 to 10th in 2018.
There are 15 EZs in the CP and the Education Department ranks EZs in accordance with the results achieved by schools at national exams.
Nuwara Eliya district CTU’s, V. Indraselvan said that as several children failed the O/L exams in 2018, the WEZ schools are coaching the students even during their 2nd term holidays.
In the past, Principals, in order to achieve good results, barred weak students from sitting the O/L exams.
However, following a directive from the Human Rights Commission, that all students be allowed to sit the exam, it is learned that several had failed the entire exam with 9 ‘F’s in 2018. - CC
