Over 24,200 spikers in action for next 4 months
View(s):Over 2000 teams from all parts of the island, which includes 24,200 men and women spikers, will make the Munchee National Volleyball Championship 2019, exciting as the most important event of Sri Lanka’s national sport is set to begin.
This year’s Munchee National Volleyball Championship will be held for both men and women categories under two phases — Super League and Novices. In the Super League, 16 teams representing eight women and men teams each, inclusive of top national level players will vie for this tournament title.
For the Novices tournament, players representing the 25 districts islandwide will compete against each district. Though these players are not in the top league, through the Munchee National Volleyball Championship, they and their clubs are able to play in a tournament that is recognised at national level.
Munchee, the flagship brand of Ceylon Biscuits Ltd., (CBL) has come forward to sponsor the National Volleyball Championship 2019 for the 12th consecutive year. Throughout the years, by supporting this important volleyball tournament, Munchee has provided novice players a strong platform to demonstrate their sporting abilities and thus gain a place in the national team, according to Nalin Karunaratne, the Chief Executive Officer of CBL.
“Munchee’s partnership with the National Volleyball Championship now spans 12 successful years. As the national sport of our country, we take pride in creating a strong platform for players to showcase their strengths and the opportunity to be selected to play at national level. We are committed to the sport and believe volleyball fans too are looking forward to this annual tournament,” Karunaratne said.
Applications for the Novices edition of the Munchee National Volleyball Championship will be accepted from September 15 and for the Super League, applications will be called from December 15. The district level matches are scheduled to commence after September 15.
The official sponsorship handing over ceremony took place last week in the presence of senior management from CBL and representatives of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation (SLVF), the organisers of the championship.
