Gateway College in collaboration with the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) organized a Summer Programme for the seventh consecutive year at the UNM during the August vacation. Fifty Students & Teachers from Gateway Colleges Colombo, Kandy, Negombo and Dehiwala and Gateway Graduate School had a time of learning and fun this year too.

The 7-day programme was designed to give students exposure to a diversity of knowledge and to experience life on campus. The visit also included time for sight-seeing and shopping. On successful completion, both students and teachers received certificates from the University that will add value whether they study further at UNM or elsewhere in the future.

The students had the opportunity to attend sessions at three different faculties. The Faculty of Engineering had practical projects planned to introduce students to the areas of Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, Material & Manufacturing and Electrical & Electronic Engineering. The Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences challenged students to think strategically through role play and simulation games.

There was much variety in the sessions organized by the Faculty of Science. Workshops on ‘Introduction to Computer Science’, ‘What is it like to be a Pharmacist?’ and ‘DNA Extractions’ covered different aspects of Science, both from a technical and a professional viewpoint.

Special Training for Teachers at the Faculty of Education:

The Directorate of Gateway whose focus has always been on the professional development of staff, sponsored 10 teachers to attend the specially designed programme at the Faculty of Education. Students following the Teacher Training Diploma at Gateway Graduate School also joined these sessions. This course was mainly based on ‘Teaching for 21st Century Students’.

Fun and Entertainment:

Participants were also given opportunities to visit places of interest and experience a taste of life in Malaysia. Witnessing a cultural show, tasting traditional Malaysian cuisine and hours of shopping were among the highlights during the two days of leisure.
