The Government of Japan will provide US$ 88,890 (approx. Rs. 15 million) for the “Project for Building for Children with Disabilities”, at Al Arsath School in the Ampara District, through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

The Grant contract was signed this week at the Ambassador’s Residence in Colombo, between the  Ambassador of Japan, Akira Sugiyama, and Chairman of Organization for Habitation & Resources Development (OHRD), A.K.M. Shihabdeen.

This project aims to improve the learning environment of 60 students with disabilities attending Al-Arsath School in Sammauthurai DS Division.

The Special Education Unit (SEU) at the school is the biggest unit in the area which students from neighbouring Divisions also attend.

However, the building and facilities they use are very old and not particularly designed for disabled children, which renders their learning environment difficult.

“Through this project, a new building for the SEU, with 3 furnished classrooms and a bathroom, will be provided. This will not only improve the learning environment of the 60 students, but also enable more students to study at the school in the future,” the Japanese Embassy said.

Commenting on the provision of this grant, Mr. Shihabdeen stated that “ the OHRD is overjoyed to associate with the Embassy of Japan, for participating in this project, which is a long felt need for the Al-Arsath School in Sammanthurai.
