Kandy secure overall title
Inter Sussex Badminton champions 2019 - Kandy Sussex, College
Sussex College Kandy easily secured the Inter-Sussex Badminton Championship 2019, concluded successfully at the S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia, Indoor Badminton Stadium last weekend.
Sussex Kandy romped home to claim the Overall Championship by claiming 316 points after 11 events out of a whole of 20, while emerging runners-up in 10. Out of the entire final events six were all-Sussex Kandy battles in which the winner was the branch.
Sussex Malabe secured the overall second spot with 90 points, while claiming a win and three runner-up positions from four finals. Sussex Kiribathgoda managed to win the overall third position with 61 points from a win and two runner-up finishes from three finals.
The awards ceremony took place under the patronage of Luvi Karunaratne, a former national champion and an official of the Badminton Association of Sri Lanka as the Chief Guest and K.A. Sunil Jayathissa, Founder Chairman of Sussex College Network as Guest of Honour.

The tournament was held for two days and more than 500 students participated from 20 schools islandwide in the Sussex College Network. The tournament was held for the 14th year under grand scale.
Addressing the gathering, chief guest Karunarathne said that he was delighted to accept the invitation since badminton is the most closest game to his heart thus producing a player of international standard Niluka, his eldest son. He also said that as much as he has done to his own sons, he will gladly accept an opportunity to help and assist the young budding shuttlers at Sussex.
“I would also like to give an advice to the parents to not to get involved in coaching which should be done quite freely and independently by the coaches themselves,” he advised.
Sunil Jayathissa, the Founder Chairman, addressing the gathering said that he has taken steps to establish a Sports Division to the Network to handle all sports activities efficiently and professionally. The officials of the division has gone all out to make the championship a very successful one where almost 500 children battled for honours.
While congratulating the winners and wishing better luck for the others in the coming years, he conveyed his sincere thanks to the parents, principals, the prefect of games and the energetic organising committee for conducting the event successfully.
In addition Master Hiruka Sahan, the Under-13 national badminton champion from Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa was awarded a scholarship by Sunil Jayathissa, Founder Chairman of Sussex College Network.
