Steel Feathers – a band of passionate young musicians
View(s):Music is an enchanting art arisen from the mankind which could make subtle to immense changes in minds of every human being. While everyone can enjoy music, musical talents are possessed by individuals at different levels.
With that understanding, as a group of musically talented youngsters, we formed a musical band, tagged by the name ‘Steel Feathers’ on 8th September 2018, with our base in Panadura.
Since its inception, we got together once a week at Panadura and practiced our repertoires. Oshanath Rajawasam, the bassist, was appointed as the Band Manager. Other members are Disura Warusawithana on keyboards, Neluke Wijesuriya on lead guitar, Poorna Fernando on percussion, Yasiru Warusawithana on drums, Nipuna Fernando as main vocalist and Tharushi De Silva as female vocalist and saxophonist. After the main vocalist, Nipuna migrated to Australia to follow his post-graduate studies, taking his place, a skillful young individual, Didula Tharusara joined the family.
Along the journey of one year, our performances have been staged at a few parties and a concert. While getting experiences of live performing, we also thought of being on par with current trends of music performance. As a result, we released a mashup of three of the epic hits of contemporary popular artists Bathiya and Santhush. It reached a great audience over the cyberspace through YouTube and Facebook.
We have embraced music since our childhood and college orchestras, choirs, and brass bands had been our essential involvements at school. All the members of the band are gifted with musical talents which are not restricted to just playing and singing. Some of the members are lyricists as well as composers who have created a set of few original songs.
As an emerging set of musicians, our intension is to provide music of good quality to refine the musical taste of Sri Lankan community. Based upon Sinhala pop music of 70’s, we have structured our performance to resonate with the beautiful melodies of Sinhala together with many English hits of that era.
Nevertheless, our interest in modern music which consist of vibrant tones, chords and rhythms is equally significant. We strongly believe that music is not merely an accessory to dance but a spiritual agent that touches souls. Hence, apart from entertainment and business events to showcase our talents, a special attention has been given towards applying music in Healthcare and Charity to contain our souls with merits.
For instance, prior to our establishment as a band, we performed soothing music to the patients who were present at the celebration of World Hemophilia Day in 2017, held at Sri Lanka Foundation Institute. Blessed by that experience, we wish to continue to engage in such events, which adds value beyond to a normal band.
We are proud to say that all of us have excelled in our academics as well. Some of us are university undergraduates, while the two youngest members are studying for their G.C.E. (Advanced Level). Our message to the youth is that, one can master both art and academics and it essentially builds a balanced and empowered personality. That is why ‘our minds are as firm as steel and hearts are as tender as feathers’.
We are extremely grateful to our parents for their continuous patronage.
Also, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Anura Fernando, and our fellow mates, Isal Laksika and Niduk Fernando for being with us right from the beginning. We have gained blessings from many individuals who have believed in us forging ahead with a righteous attitude.
