Breathtaking ‘Sorabora Wewa’ in Mahiyanganaya is one of the ancient wonders of the Badulla District, which considered the biggest tourist attraction of the Plains off Dumbara Mountains’ on the other side of Mahaweli Ganga.
According to history, it was constructed during the reign of King Dutugemunu (161 BC – 137 BC) by ‘Bulatha’, one of the strongest giants of King Dutugemunu’s ‘ dasa maha yodayo’ brigade. In the ancient past, this tank was known as the ‘Sea of Binthenna’.
Offering sweeping vistas of ‘Sorabora wewa’, Sorabora Village Hotel offers eco-friendly accommodation set amidst the tranquil Sorabora Range. It is conveniently located just a few hundred metres ahead of the ancient wewa, offering a world of comfort to travellers to the area.
Formerly known as Sorabora Inn, hotel came under the present management in 2017. Named as ‘GMT Sorabora Village’ since 2019, hotel boastof being the biggest hotel in the area with 40 luxury rooms including 12 superior rooms, six deluxe rooms, 5 standard rooms and 17 non a/c rooms. Centrally built swimming pool, beautiful garden, restaurant, modern Crystal Ballroom and the lounge attracts the larger Sri Lankan community to the hotel.

The Wasgamuwa National Park is home to a majestic herd of over 150 elephants, the shy sloth bear and much more. At the Mahiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya lies the most ancient stupa to be built in Sri Lanka, the site of Lord Buddha’s first visit to Sri Lanka. The Veddahs of Dambana continues to fiercely guard their traditions and customs whilst the picturesque dam of Sorabora Wewa not only reflects the ingenuity of early kings but is also breathtakingly beautiful by sunset.
