Mock operation carried out in Colombo by Special Forces

The 17 mission of the ongoing ‘Ex-Cormorant shrike’ mock operation was carried out in Colombo by the Special Forces of the Army.

The mock-exercise carried out saw the rescue of Central Bank officials who were held captive by a group of 7 to 12 terrorists infiltrated the building.

The terrorists who were armed with T-56 rifles, light machine gun pistols, hand grenades, snipers and improvised explosive devices, were demanding US$ 100,000 in exchange for the hostages.

The teams consisted of eight, along with one reserve strike force team, and another eight member team carried out the operation and gained control of the building, rescuing the bank officials.

The teams were dropped to the top of the building by a Bell 212 helicopter and combat riders gave cover to the ground troops.

Senior officers such as the Exercise Director and the Director of Operations of the Army Headquarters observed the exercise.
