The National Election Commission has launched several measures to ensure a trouble-free presidential election, with a little over two months left for the polls.

Workshops and seminars for would-be election officials, meetings with heads of media institutions and social media groups about the implementation of the guidelines and discussions regarding security arrangements have already got underway.

This week, Senior DIG Jagath Abeysiri Gunawardena was appointed to oversee arrangements for the election. He is the DIG in charge of the Western Province and Traffic.

National Election Commission Chief Mahinda Deshapriya has confirmed that the 2018 electoral register will be used for the election.

Accordingly, 15.9 million voters will be eligible to vote at the upcoming presidential election, with the Gampaha district accounting for the highest voter registration figure of 1.7 million. The Colombo district comes second with 1.6 million registered voters followed by the Kurunegala district with 1.3 million voters.
