National champ Harshana wins Silver
National Chess champion Harshana Thilakarathne (Maliyadeva College Kurunegala) won Silver in the Under (U)-18 Open Event, at the Western Asian Youth Chess Championship 2019 held in New Delh, India, from September 4-11. Sri Lanka was represented by a 16-member National Youth Chess Team.
Harshana was the only player to win a medal at the standard Chess event. He also won Silver at the Western Asian Youth Blitz Chess Championship 2019. Harshana scored 6 points from a possible nine games while the champion from India. Srijit Paul scored 7 points.
Another Sri Lankan, Devnethmi Dahampriya won Bronze in the U-16 Girls event at the Western Asian Rapid Youth Chess Championship 2019. She was the only Lankan medalist at the Rapid event.
