Men's champions - University of Sri Jayawardenepura
The University of Sri Jayewardenepura emerged champions as well as the Overall Men’s champions of the 13th Sri Lanka University Games (SLUG 2019), which was hosted by the University of Ruhuna. The University of Colombo, who won the Overall Women’s champions were runners-up.
President Maithripala Sirisena was the chief guest at the opening ceremony while Sri Lanka’s most respected sports personality, Kumar Sangakkara, was the chief guest at the awards presentation.
In his address Sangakkara said that sport allows you to experience real life challenges in a fun format.
“It teaches you that sometimes the world is not fair and life is not fair. It teaches you that to succeed in life as well as in sport that it needs strength of character, focus, planning, strategy, tactics, concentration, teamwork and the ability to completely believe in the fact that you are at your best. It also teaches you values and life lessons that sometimes you don’t learn in your classrooms and lecture halls,” he said.
Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna Senior Professor Sujeewa Amarasena said that in the 41-year history it was the first occasion that the head of the nation had come to the University of Ruhuna. He thanked President Sirisena for the allocation of 10 Million Rupees for the development of sports at the University.
Over 7000 athletes representing 14 universities took part in this year’s edition of SLUG. - PDdeS
