IIHS offers BSc. (Hons.) Nursing Studies Degree from Coventry University, United Kingdom

Advancing its commitment to healthcare careers, the International Institute of Health Science (IIHS), Sri Lankan’s premier education institute began offering a new BSc Nursing Studies degree in collaboration with the renowned Coventry University (CU), UK, recently.

Over the past 18 years, IIHS has been a pioneer in nursing education. Whilst being the premier International University Learning Centre (IULC) in Sri Lanka IIHS partners with leading international universities to provide quality programmes at an affordable fee.

Building on its existing strong affiliations, IIHS has expanded its partnership with the forward-thinking modern Coventry University by introducing this new degree for the nurses of Sri Lanka and the region.

Award-winning Coventry University is ranked 4th in UK for Nursing and 2nd for Clinical Placements guaranteeing outstanding graduate employability. The degree is recognised by the University Grant Commission and the programme is also approved by the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Commenting on the new degree programme, Dr. Amal Harsha De Silva, Deputy Director General– Medical Services said: “This programme is extremely valuable for the nurses of Sri Lanka as it will help upgrade their existing knowledge and skills whilst uplifting the profession to UK standards. IIHS has been doing a remarkable service for the nurses of Sri Lanka and we should salute Dr. Edirisinghe and the team for bringing  Coventry University BSc. (Hons.) Nursing Studies is a great venture and the state sector values such an input”.

The programme’s lecture panel includes local and international professionals who are experts in their fields. The academic content is provided via the IIHS and CU Learner Management system empowering students to practically apply the knowledge gained in the classroom.

Dr. Kithsiri Edirisinghe (MBBS, MSc, MD (Medical Administration), Founder/ CEO/ Director Academics, Strategy and International Affairs, IIHS, said, “We are extremely pleased that IIHS has extended its partnership with Coventry University UK and are able to offer a prestigious nationally ranked nursing programme for local students. The programme structure also supports working nurses in completing their nursing education presenting an opportunity to expand their clinical and theoretical skills and knowledge so they are better positioned to advance in the profession. The launch of the degree is another example of IIHS’s commitment to offer world-class programmes and curricula, while leveraging our vast expertise to make a difference in Sri Lanka’s rapidly growing health-care industry. This aligns with the organisational direction of providing quality education to the nurses of South Asia.”

Importantly as the course is fully accredited by the NMC, upon completion, successful degree students will be eligible to apply for registration with UK’s Nursing and Midwifery Council. IIHS will provide students ready assistance and support towards UK registration.

Furthering its pioneering model, IIHS facilitates the programme while, Coventry University awards the degree. Upon completion, students can graduate in Sri Lanka or in Coventry, UK.

The duration of the BSc. Nursing degree is two years. Students are presented the opportunity to complete six clinical specialisations. Students can attend classes every two weeks which also enables for students to work during the programme should they choose to.

Sri Lankan nursing staff are also able to further their careers by attending the Coventry degree programme as the Ministry of Health authorises duty leave for state employees to attend UGC recognised programmes. Additionally, they are also entitled to apply for promotions in both the state and private sectors.

With over 500 Nursing graduates and 1500 active Sri Lankan nursing students following the Bachelors in Nursing Degree, IIHS has carved its name in the health education arena. Today, there are over 50 Masters graduates in Sri Lanka and 100 Maldivian Nursing students studying in the programs offered in all five Learning Centres of IIHS.
