Rukmal hears the final whistle!

One of local football’s most lovable characters has bowed out of the game felled by a longillness over the last few years. But until the final whistle was blown he strode the soccer fields of Sri Lanka like a colossus, helping shape the destiny of this popular international sport and helping bring many youngsters within its sphere of influence. Rukmal was an imposing figure in his day, Captaining De Mazenod College, Kandana and going on to represent Sri Lanka Schools. Like illustrious stars of the past, Rukmal excelled in central defense, reading the game like few could do from that pivotal position. He was a tower of strength to many Football Chiefs notably Manilal Fernando who gave him the opportunity to serve in World Cup events as a FIFA official. He excelled in the organization of international events for both FIFA and AFC and was always in the forefront of FFSL events as Media Manager in many administrations.
He has gone a few games too early! He will be missed by the Football family which was hiscovenant throughout his life. To his family and friends he was a gentle giant you could always rely on, affable, genial and humble. May the turf lie gently on him! May devas serenade him to his abode with the almighty!
