The Ministry of Education (MoE) will distribute 96,000 Tabs to GCE A/L students and teachers of National schools, end of next month, keeping with a pledge in 2015.

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said the Tabs will be distributed in 3 stages under the proposed programme estimated to cost Rs 4 billion.

Mr Kariyawasam said the MoE’s target is around 200,000 Tabs.

He said the plan is to use a Tab for about 4 years which means that 2 batches of A/L students will be able to make use of a Tab. The Tabs will not be permitted to be taken home.

Arrangements have been made to provide WiFi facilities through 2 mobile partners with charging points in the classroom.

The Tabs will also be provided with keyboards, if necessary.

The model of the Tab will be one of the latest models in 2019, contrast to claims that the MoE intended to distribute old models.

He said necessary security features too have been included to prevent students misusing the tabs by accessing unnecessary sites.

Arrangements have already been made to provide Tabs for 25 subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Accounts and Maths.

He said that model Question papers and Past papers will also be made available.

Training has been provided to 9,950 Teachers through 125 master trainers, who will be able to guide the students.
