Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of the College of Chemical Sciences, Institute of Chemistry Ceylon-Malabe Campus
View(s):The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, established in 1971, the successor to the Chemical Society of Ceylon, which was founded in 1941 is the only professional body for chemists responsible for maintenance and enhancement of the profession of Chemistry in Sri Lanka.
The Institute has been conducting the Graduateship in Chemistry Programme since 1979 and has the prestige of being the producer of the highest number of Graduate Chemists annually in Sri Lanka.
A large percentage of these graduates seek employment in the industry. The Graduateship in Chemistry Programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK and is well recognized internationally enabling graduates to secure postgraduate opportunities in prestigious universities worldwide.
The College of Chemical Sciences which was established in 2001 is the education arm of the Institute. In addition to conducting the Graduateship in Chemistry Programme and the Diploma in Laboratory Technology, the College hopes to commence the B.Sc. (Honours) Degree in Chemistry in the future. The proposed degree programme will produce chemists with an outstanding knowledge and skills not only in diverse fields of chemistry but also in the field of management. It is hoped that these graduates will seek employment in industries in Sri Lanka and contribute towards economic development.
The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon has initiated the construction of an educational building complex at Halbarawa, Malabe on a plot of land received from the Urban Development Authority in 2017. The foundation stone laying ceremony for the construction of the proposed building complex, the College of Chemical Sciences, Institute of Chemistry Ceylon – Malabe Campus will be held on 30th September 2019 with Patali Champika Ranawaka, Minister of Megapolis and Western Development gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest. Many distinguished invitees, and renowned scientists and industrialists in the country are expected to grace the occasion.
Furthermore, Past Presidents, members, staff and students of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon will also attend the event.
The completion of the construction of the Malabe Campus will enable the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon to produce a higher number of chemistry graduates annually than at present to serve the country paving towards sustainable economic development. This event no doubt will be a milestone in the history of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon. We wish the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon all the very best to reach greater heights in the years to come.
