Principals and teachers warned they would go on an indefinite strike from mid next month, if their demands on salaries is not agreed upon.

Prior to the indefinite strike, they have warned of a continuous 5-day strike commencing October 7, as they have not been able to get a favourable response so far. Some 30 Teachers Unions and 15 Principals Unions representing about 250,000 members, will be involved in the trade union action, according Sri Lanka Teachers Services Union Secretary Mahinda Jayasinge.

Until they commence the strike, they will keep away from attending to extra work, including organizing Sports events, paper marking and administrative duties.

Mr Jayasinghe said, though the government claims that the teachers’ salaries will be revised from January, so far, they have not been shown the proposal prepared by the Salaries & Cadres Commission.
