The Colombo Law Library (CLL) has written to Justice Minister Thalatha Atukorale appealing for immediate action to avert an “imminent disaster” at the Colombo District Court complex, which is on the verge of collapsing.

In a letter addressed to the Minister, the CLL has drawn the Minister’s attention to the dilapidated conditions and lack of facilities in the court building. The state of the building is a serious threat to the lives of litigants, judges, lawyers and court staff, the letter notes. It also asks the minister to look into providing proper toilet facilities for the public.

The CLL points out that although lawyers had made complaints on several occasions during the past few years over the state of the complex, no action has been taken to refurbish it.

“The aforesaid inaction of the state is causing a serious threat to the safety of all users of the Colombo District Court Complex and we hereby give you notice that, the State would be held responsible if no immediate action is taken to ensure the safety of the users,” the letter stresses.
