UN Day Celebrations at The Overseas School of Colombo
View(s):24th October marks United Nations Day and is part of United Nations Week which runs from 20th to 26th October. The Overseas School of Colombo (OSC) traditionally celebrates UN Day during the first week of October, and has been doing so continuously, for the past 30 years. This year, OSC hosted their 31st UN Day celebration on 04th October with a focus on UN Sustainable Development Goal #5 – Gender Equality.
The day started off with a parade and celebration of the different nationalities that make up the school community. A congregation of primary and secondary school students decked in their traditional attire witnessed the reading of the Declaration of Human Rights led by OSC COMUN Secretary General – Rika Goonetilleke.
This was followed by classroom sessions run by student leaders, where children participated in activities related to gender equality. The International Food Bazaar hosted by the School Community Network (SCN) provided students and faculty with an opportunity to sample a diverse array of cuisine from all over the world. The day ended with a formal assembly in the auditorium and a speech by OSC’s Head of School – Dr. Michelle Kleiss on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. It was wonderful to witness true “Unity in Diversity” – which is the school’s motto and its greatest strength.
