Royal Rugby Rally 2019 on November 24
The Rugby Advisory Committee of the Royal College Union (RCU) together with Automobile Association of Ceylon have organised a fun rally to raise funds for the 2020 rugby season of Royal College for the third consecutive year on November 24, a Sunday.
“The RCU targets to raise the college’s Rugby Development Fund for upgrading the sport and the welfare of the players,” said Ajita Pasqual, the Chairman of the RCU Advisory Committee, at a press conference held at the Royal College Skills Development Centre on Wednesday.
“Rugby in Royal has made a significant contribution to the college winning the League title for the past three years consecutively,” stated the Principal of Royal College, B.A. Abeyratne.
Royal has a long rugby history dating back to 1960s. Since then, the college has also been making significant contribution to Sri Lankan rugby as well as having produced a number of national players over the years.
The Reid Avenue school is also competing in the annual Bradby Shield with arch rival Trinity College, Kandy and the Gunaratne Trophy, the biggest events of the local school rugby calendar.
Royal College has a strong junior level programme to improve the standard of fitness and player development.
Rugby Rally was first introduced in 2017 to assist player-development and welfare and last year it drew over one million donation from the sport loving old boys. It will be a vehicular parade in which each vehicle is required to have a driver and a navigator in order to participate in the event.
Instructions on how the race is to be run and scored will be provided prior to the race being flagged off in morning at 8.00am at the Boake Gates. The route will be around 70-kilometres long and take participants across Colombo and some of its suburbs. Participants will be awarded points based on activities completed at certain pit stops and their timing for each segment.
