Summer of cinema from Europe
The cinema enthusiasts, European film lovers and students in cinema will have yet another opportunity to experience some of the latest films made in the European region with the 11th European Film Festival here in Colombo. Organised by the delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka, the festival will be held from October 18 to 21 at the National Film Corporation cinema.
The European Film Festival promotes cultural exchanges between Europe and Sri Lanka and aims to promote understanding between people from the two regions. This is the 11th year that the festival takes place in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Nine critically acclaimed feature films and feature length documentaries from the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom will be screened at this year’s festival.
The festival will kick off with the Dutch film ‘Stranger In Paradise’ directed by Guido Hendrikx. This 2016 film will be screened at 3.30 pm.
The second film ‘Ray & Liz’ from the United Kingdom will be screened at 6.30 pm on October 18. It is directed by Richard Billingham
On October 19, the festival will be opened with the Polish film ‘Mug’ (TWARZ) directed by Małgorzata Szumowska at 10.30 am.
It will be followed by ‘The Silence of Others’ (El Silencio De Los Otros) directed by Almudena Carracedo, Robert Bahar at 3.30 pm. Made in 2018, the film is a Spain and the USA co-production. The final film of the day is ‘The Vice of Hope’ (IL VIZIO DELLA SPERANZA) directed by Edoardo De Angelis. This 2018 Italian film will be shown at 6.30 pm.
On October 20 ‘Bloody Milk’ (PETIT PAYSAN) directed by Hubert Charuel will be screened at 3.30 pm. The film is made in France. ‘Winter Flies’ (ZIMSKE MUHE) a co-production from Czech Republic and Slovenia, Poland and Slovakia will be screened at 6.30 pm on the same day.
It is directed by Olmo Omerzu. On the final day, October 21, the film from Germany, Bulgaria and Austria, ‘Western’ directed by Valeska Grisebach will be screened at 3.30 pm and the closing film of the festival will be ‘Diamantino’ directed by Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt will be screened at 6.30 pm. This 2018 film is a co-production Portugal, France and Brazil.
Admission for all the screening is free of charge.
