AIS student shines at the University of Melbourne

Dulanya Cooray submitted an essay which won her a full scholarship to the Trinity Young Leaders Programme at the University of Melbourne.
Held in July and December each year, YLP gives young leaders from around the world an opportunity to immerse themselves in a dynamic intellectual community.
Dulanya took part in the social justice stream where, through a series of lectures and projects, she explored issues in immigration, disability, and the First Nation peoples of Australia.
“It was a programme about learning new things, from the thought provoking lectures and discussions to activities such as rock climbing and trapeze, it taught me that it is important, even easy, to learn new things all the time,” says Dulanya.
Earlier this year, she decided to create a website to help women who have experienced harassment. During the school year, she spoke to women engaged in the issue to gain their insights, and created a website that includes a database where women can compile details about their harassment and the perpetrator, access support and anonymously share their stories.
“I believe this project is important because the backlash from society prevents women from seeking help. The anonymity provided by an online service that doesn’t record personal data helps women seek out help and allow their stories to be heard in a community that would rather have them silenced,” she declares.
The Principal added, “While the school has always been proud of her academic achievements (at Edexcel IGCSE examination, for example, where she earned an amazing 11 A*s), we treasure her genuine spirit of serving others.”
Dulanya is an example to all students for her hard work, her accomplishments, and her humble pursuit of a greater good.
