Water’s Edge garbage dump: Sunday Times story brings relief to residents
View(s):The Urban Development Authority (UDA) has instructed the immediate clearance of the garbage dump behind the Water’s Edge hotel in Battaramulla.
UDA Director General S.S.P. Rathnayake told the Sunday Times that the hotel had been instructed to keep the land clean and they were in the process of clearing the dump.
Last week, the Sunday Times reported that the Water’s Edge had dumped garbage in an area behind the hotel causing inconvenience to residents of Subathipura.
The hotel’s chairman, Chamath de Silva, said 95 percent of the garbage had been removed from the land and the hotel’s security director had been directed to ensure that garbage was not dumped there in the future.
“We have come up with solutions to manage garbage disposal and we will see to it that they are implemented. Accordingly, food waste and polythene will be sold to collectors, and event organisers will be instructed to find their own means of disposing material used for decorations. Anyone failing to do so will not be repaid the advance deposit made by them to the hotel,” he said..
Meanwhile, Subuthipura residents who were affected by the garbage said they were happy about the speedy action taken to address their woes.
“The hotel apologised for the inconvenience caused and they have assured that no more garbage will be dumped at that site which will be turned into a car park soon,” a resident said.
