Dialog Axiata PLC has been working for several years with the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) of Sri Lanka and with valuable partners, to minimise the adverse impact of extreme weather. The Disaster Emergency Warning Network (DEWN) mobile application proactively alerts the public of the likelihood of extreme weather, along with providing them with the knowledge and tools to be better prepared.

Designed and developed for the DMC, through a partnership between Dialog, Microimage Mobile Media (Pvt) Ltd., and the Dialog–University of Moratuwa Mobile Communications Research Laboratory, DEWN uses the latest mobile communication technology to transmit alerts over the mobile network to issue customised alerts to the public and first responders, warning them of impending natural disasters.

In a media release, Dialog said the DEWN system facilitates the dispatching of alerts to first responders and the media, acting as a mechanism for the DMC to connect multiple stakeholder groups to prevent hazards from turning into disasters. The DEWN system is capable of sending critical national or regional alerts using Cell Broadcast technology, which is a basic feature of any standard mobile phones. The app for smartphones incorporates the same features as well as providing map facilities to guide users to the nearest evacuation point, once defined by the DMC.
DEWN is available for free download on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
