No public display of students’ achievements at exams- MoE
View(s):The Ministry of Education (MoE) has imposed a ban on principals advertising students’ achievements at public examinations, to reduce the negative psychological impact on other students who haven’t fared as well, an MoE official said.
A circular to this effect has been issued to the Principals, preventing them from advertising campaigns usually done after the release of public examinations results such as Grade 5, GCE OL and A/L results.
The Circular states that schools will only be able to display their results on a noticeboard within school, instead of displaying boards/banners outside the schools, of students who scored high marks.
The Circular also prevents principals making statements about the performance of the students.
“The National and Provincial schools will need to follow these measures strictly,” the official said.
Commissioner General of Examinations Sanath Pujitha said their research conducted earlier revealed that, publicising results affected students, and some of those in the tuition industry were benefiting from this.
He said that, as about 150,000 students sit the Grade 5 Scholarship exam, it was unfair to promote a group of students who achieve high results.
He said, in future, they intend sending the results to the respective schools, and not release them on the internet.
For A/L, only the District rank will be released, while the national rank will not be released.
