Remembering what happened on Oct. 26 last year

As the country prepares for the presidential election, a special event was held at Independence Square to mark the first anniversary of the constitutional coup that took place on October 26 last year. Civic action group leaders and activists took part in this event which they said was a reminder to government leaders of how democracy could be undermined. The constitutional coup ended with the Supreme Court ruling that President Maithripala Sirisena’s removal of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the subsequent dissolution of Parliament were unconstitutional.
