Two Matale schools, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Maha Vidyalaya and Hindu College, were declared Division ‘B’ joint champions at the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey tournament 2019 for Boys Under-16 concluded at Edward Park hockey ground in Matale. The final between the two schools could not be played due to adverse weather conditions. Heavy rain prevailed during the afternoon and forced the organisers to declare the two teams as joint champions.
Sirimavo Bandaranaike MV (Oshada 2, Nadeesha and Sachintha 1 goal each) beat Asoka Vidyalaya Colombo 10 by 4-2 while Hindu College (Kesuthasan 2, Gajamohan, Ravikumar and Praveen 1 goal each) beat Elwala Maha Vidyalaya, Matale 5-0 in the respective semi-finals.
In the quarter-final Sirimavo Bandaranaike MV beat
St. Thomas’ College, Matara 10-0 while Hindu College outplayed Dharmaloka College, Kelaniya 4-0.
D. Gajamohan of Hindu College was named the Best Player while the award for the Best Goalkeeper was won by K.C. Hasaranga of Sirimavo Bandaranaike MV, Matale. The tournament organised and conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association, attracted 22 boys teams from across the island.
