According to the QS world university ranking for the year 2019, Massachusetts Institute of Technology was ranked at the top of the list. And it’s for the third consecutive year that the MIT University, which is famous for its science and technology research, has been top of the QS World University Rankings.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is located in the city of Cambridge, Massachusetts as an independent, integrated, private research university. It was established in 1861 with the aim of providing ‘further knowledge and prepare students in science, technology and other fields of study that will best benefit the nation and the world today’.

The main focus as a technology based university is depicted through the motto Mens et Manus, which can be translated as “Mind and Hand”. This motto enigmatically encapsulates this famous institution’s mission to advance knowledge in science, technology and areas of scholarship that can help to make the world a better place.  Coupling teaching with research the primary focus is on solving real-world problems.

One of the key factors considered when measuring the QS ranking is the academic performance of the alumni of the university. And MIT has achieved that in great heights due to the chosen exclusive set of students which represent 7% of the total applicants.

Among these, the university claims the parenthood of impressive alumni including 85 Nobel Laureates, 58 National Medal of Science winners, 29 National Medal of Technology and Innovation winners and 45 MacArthur Fellows.

It would lack acceptance if there was a lack a performance in science and technology field, but the university cannot be underestimated when the scientific discoveries and technological advances include some of the most important findings and innovations. These include the first chemical synthesis of penicillin, the development of radar, the discovery of quarks, and the invention of magnetic core memory, which enabled the development of digital computers.

It can be seen that the most of the marks of the university was received thanks to the alumni who got the best advantage of the platform which was created by the University for the Students to perform.

Science and technology are not the only the prominent areas of MIT. Approximately 20 percent of MIT undergraduates join a sports team, and with 33 varsity sports MIT is one of the broadest intercollegiate athletic programmes in the world.

A variety of arts culture is also permitted in college life which is facilitated by the 12 museums and galleries on campus, with the MIT Museum drawing nearly 125,000 visitors each year. Students are free to participate in more than 60 music, theatre, writing and dance groups.

To facilitate these students MIT at present runs five different schools: architecture and planning, engineering, humanities, arts and social sciences, management and science.

MIT is set in 166 acres of land, comprising of 26 acres of playing fields, more than 20 gardens and green spaces, 18 student residences and around 50 publicly cited works of art.

The academic departments and institutes encompass numerous degree-granting programmes and interdisciplinary centres, laboratories, and programmes. MIT provides home for a student population which is more than 11000 including international students who come from different countries.

The research data also estimate that all the living alumni of MIT have launched more than 30,000 active companies created 4.6 million jobs and generated roughly $1.9 trillion in annual revenue between them. Taken together, this ‘MIT Nation’ is equivalent, they say, to the 10th-largest economy in the world.

It can be seen that the success of the university not only depend on individual effort alone but the addition of all these efforts of the students, staff and everyone else as  a whole. Also the outcomes which led the university to be ranked first are heavily based on the teaching system which motivate and provide the students the space to grow in the big garden as a small plant which shows the uniqueness and beauty.
