St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy better known for their work in the Boxing ring, continued their good form by winning the annual 102nd Stubb Shield Championship 2019, worked off at the Jayathilaka Stadium in Nawalapitiya.
Sylvester’s won all 4 finals and their good work was a continuity in tandem for the last 15 years. Royal took the runner-up trophy. Meanwhile, less privileged Dheerananda MV, Pilimathalawa, finishing No.3, was a remarkable feat, having less facilities than other schools.
Trinity too, ended in the top 5, in a sport forgotten for the last couple of years. But it was a core sports in the ’80′s at the Kandy School, with Rugby taking the lead as always. They were coached by Lahiru Senarathne, who was involved with the sport at Trinity from 2007-2014.
They won 1 Gold, with Attaab Manzil winning the junior event, plus a Silver and 4 Bronze. Kamal Denagama won Silver in the 69 kg Under-20 bout. Meanwhile Bronze were won for Trinity by Waruna Bandara, Hamdan Faizal, Miranga Subasinghe and Zerik Zakeer.
Boxing Association of Sri Lanka Vice President Lt.Col. (Rtd) Hemantha Weerasinghe, a former National Boxing product of St. Sylvester’s, was the Chief Guest.
