Group of 2016 conducts ‘Lead the Sticks’ Hockey Carnival 2019 successfully

Team Titans defeated Team Hurricanes to claim the Under-16 championship
The Group of 2016 of Zahira College Colombo conducted the ‘Lead the Sticks’ Hockey Carnival 2019 at the College Grounds last weekend. Teams formed from the college Under-12 and Under-16 teams participated in this tournament.
The Under-12 tournament was won by Team White, who defeated Team Black by a penalty shootout, after the final was abandoned by bad weather. The finalists outplayed the two remaining teams in action — Team Green and Team Maroon to reach the final.
Individual awards were also on offer as the Best Goalkeeper award was won by Al Hamdi of Team Hurricanes. The Best Player award went to Mohamed Haseeb of Team Titans. The champions Team White were led by Akam Azmi.
Team Black emerged Under-12 runners-up
Team Titans defeated Team Hurricanes in the final to win the Under-16 championship, as the two finalists topped the remaining competitors Team Bolt, Team Strikers Team and Team Panthers in the preliminary rounds. The winning team was led by Abdul Hakem.
The event also included an exhibition match between the team of Group of 2016 Under-20s and Old Zahira Hockey Club, who eventually won the game.
Four Under-20 Senior team players were felicitated by Zahira College Group of 2016 as they played their last game for the College. They were team captain Adil Fazroon, vice captain Aman Azhar, Mohamed Ajmal and Mohamed Arqam. Group of 2016 member Aashiq Omar was felicitated by the organisers for achieving national level in hockey.
Zahira College Prefects of Discipline, Muhseen Ariff, Basketball Master-in-Charge Ahnaf Khan, Zahira College OBA Vice President M. Shiraz, Hockey Teacher-in-Charge Shihana Annon, Sectional Head of Primary (English Section) Riyaza Rafeek, Hockey Coach M. Shihan and Old Zahira Hockey Club member M.Z.M. Rushdi gave away certificates and awards to the participants and winners. President of the Group of 2016 Abdul Azeez, Secretary, Mohamed Azar, Project Chairman, Ashiq Omar and other members of the group were also present.
