SLR Ex-Co dumps former boss’ ARFU dream
View(s):A request made by Asanga Seneviratne, the former President of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR), to nominate him as Sri Lanka representative of Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) has been strongly rejected, according to reliable sources.
Lasitha Gunaratne, the incumbent President of SLR confirmed the development stating that majority of the SLR Executive Committee members have opposed to the request.
“Of what and how I know, the ARFU representative should be a serving official or office bearer,” Gunaratne stated.
Seneviratne presently is part of one of SLR’s non-executive committees, but that does not qualify him to become Sri Lanka’s ARFU representative, which must be approved by the SLR Executive Committee.
“Serving in a non-executive committee of SLR, does not mean that any individual can be nominated for such a position”.
SLR has proposed its incumbent President, Lasitha Gunaratne as Sri Lanka Representative for ARFU. Seneviratne has served under different capacities at SLR, Sri Lanka Cricket and is currently a Vice President of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOC).
Seneviratne’s request has been forwarded to the Executive Committee of SLR after its officials were highly concerned of the risk of losing funds granted by ARFU, as the former SLR President is a present top official of NOC.
“It’s totally unethical for someone who is not an office bearer of SLR, to represent the country at the regional office to decide on what’s good for the sport. It might cause severe flops, so the Executive Committee did not treat the request positively,” a member of SLR Executive Committee stated.
