Issuing a statement, Mr. Gomes stated that he will be stepping down “allowing the new government to appoint a new Chairman.”
Mr. Gomes had been serving in his capacity for over nine months which was approved by the President and then later was asked to head both institutions the promotion bureau and the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).
In the statement he noted that he had taken the lead in responding to the challenge faced by the industry in the aftermath of the April 21 attacks; and establishing an Emergency Response Team combining the two organisations.
By end October the industry had recovered up to 80 per cent in just six months “reviving hopes of early recovery as compared to the time taken by other countries in similar situations,” he stated.
