Five Sri Lankan surfers for Asia Surfing Championship
View(s):A team of five surfers will represent Sri Lanka at the Asia Surfing Championships 2019, which will begin today in Shantou, China. The competition will continue until next Sunday with 10 different events scheduled to take place, out of which the Sri Lanka surfers will pin their hopes of securing a berth at the Asian Games 2022, also to be held in China.
The Sri Lanka team includes top two who were among the best performers in the recently held World Surf League in Arugambay. Out of the remaining three surfers, Yashika Shehan will make his debut for the national team.
The team is led by Praneeth Sandaruwan, one of the experienced local surfers. Sandaruwan will have the confident of a positive outcome with Lakshitha Madushan and Nadeen Sampath in his team. The other key surfer is A.H. Milan, who has heap of exposure from international events.
The Sri Lanka surfing team left to China yesterday, accompanied by two officials — Harin Ukwatte, the Chef de Mission and President of Surfing Federation of Sri Lanka, and Lahiru Wijesekara, the team manager.
Beside debutant Shehan, the remaining surfers are well experienced competing at major surfing events in India, Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia. Skipper Sandaruwan, Madushan and Sampath are favourites to secure medals for the country while Milan is equally capable of making an impact.
